“I decided to protect you…”

Guren had vowed, many years ago, to watch over the boy. Not just for Masahiro’s sake, but for Seimei too. Seimei had always been good to him, after all.

“I trust you to be by his side and help him focus his power,” Seimei had said, the day Guren had expressed his intentions, “But you are also to give him the space he needs to grow. He must be allowed to learn from his mistakes.”

Guren had sworn to do that, too. The problem was, Guren had not expected to come to love the boy quite so deeply; until it almost hurt to think about it, or even to be apart from Masahiro for long periods of time.

The time would come when he would have to let go - Guren knew this. Until then he promised to himself - to Seimei - to keep his head down and concentrate on helping Masahiro grow. Nurturing this wonderful boy to become the most powerful Onmyouji, surpassing even Seimei. That was the most important thing, the unselfish thing to do…

But sometimes, late at night as the boy’s soft, rhythmic breathing lulled Guren he would close his eyes and transform from his Mokkun form, and hold Masahiro, and lay feather kisses in his hair, just to hear the contented noises rising from the sleeping boy’s mouth.

With Masahiro so young and Seimei’s trust in him so important, that was the only indulgence Guren dared to allow himself.

For now, it was enough.
